YOU GOTTA HAVE FAITH

Belief is important to The Matrix. The idea set out in the film is that you must have faith in order to achieve your objectives. Morpheus is the film’s unwavering believer and faith’s strongest proponent. His role is to uphold it. The Oracle, meanwhile, is a planter of hope by giving out individual prophecies that people can believe in to help them meet the wider objective, which is to free humanity from the grip of the machines. But faith vacillates among the film’s other characters—Trinity doubts, Neo doubts, Cypher doubts. They are all guided by Morpheus to stay on track by his firm belief, so much so that the prophecy at times feels like a self-fulfilling one.

“Don’t think you are, know you are,” says Morpheus. If we all went into any venture fully on board with the idea of achieving our targets, our success rates would be through the roof, by the film’s reckoning. If only there were a way for us to be more Morpheus (oh, wait, there is—the Wisdom of Morpheus quotes in this book). Believe with every fiber, and it will come to pass: that’s the message. Belief is everything, because belief will center you, give you strength, and impart an inability to accept any other outcome. Morpheus’s words of wisdom—combined with the Oracle’s—help embed that into our own minds. Once you’ve bought into the wisdom of Morpheus, basically you can achieve anything, baby.
